History and Legend of Moonstone
According to Hindu legend, moonstone was formed from moonbeams. At one time it was believed that if you held one in your mouth during a full moon, you would see your future. In India, moonstone is still regarded as a sacred stone and is widely believed to bring good fortune
 
Moonstone was discovered by a Tamil person during the country’s colonization by the Portuguese (1505-1658)
 
Moonstone has been used in Roman jewellery for nearly two thousand years, even longer in the Orient. It has always been a sacred stone in India with a special significance for lovers, and is a traditional wedding gift there. It was a popular choice for jewelers in the Art Nouveau period
 
Moonstone also has a historical connection with travel. Once known as the "Traveler's Stone", it was used for protection against the perils of travel
 
The ancient Romans also associated moonstone with the moon and speculated that the gem was formed from drops of moonlight

  • A Semi-circular moonstone sculpture was found at the base of steps leading into the Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka which represents the moon, the carving has been interpreted in many ways. There is a lotus in the center as symbol of enlightenment, there is a further two outer rings, carved geese and the flames of fire represent purity. The other ring has carved elephants which represents birth and the horses old age and has been buried for centuries.
